It was a beautiful two days for the 34th Annual Gary Anderson Open played over the difficult but beautiful Alderbrook Golf Course.
“We couldn’t have had better weather,” said Gary Anderson, the originator of the event and who still acts as Tournament host. “It’s just beautiful for golf.”
Gary, who just celebrated his 84th birthday about two weeks ago, and who missed the event last year do to health reasons, was back in full swing, playing with his son Todd Anderson and greeting players and their families and up at the mic each evening handing out prizes.
Gary is quick to point out that it’s not all about the golf, but all proceeds raised go toward the hearing impaired, a charity close to Gary and his wife Wanda’s heart.
“We have a grandson who is hearing-impaired, so when we started this event, we decided to help that cause,” Gary said. “When we started this tournament a man named Tom Thompson at the Education Service District said there was a need, we were doing the tournament for fun and he said ‘why don’t we make it a charity event.”
Along with two days of golf, Gary and his work crew supplies three days of food for the players, sponsors and volunteers each evening hosting a dinner at Bay City Hall.
Gary moved to Las Vegas two years ago, but makes the trip back to Tillamook to see friends, visit family and to be a part of the tournament he started 34 years ago.
“We’ll spend about a month up here visiting family and friends,” he said. “And I’m attending a reunion picnic in Cottage Grove in a week, you have to be out of high school for at least 50 years to be invited to that event, which I qualify for,” he said with a chuckle.
Gary’s health is better this year, and if you watch him swing the golf club, he’s as smooth as he was when he carried a scratch handicap just few years ago.
“We played pretty good,” Gary said. “Todd did most of it, we shot a 79 gross score on Saturday during the best-ball and a 73 gross on Sunday during the scramble.”
Gary has passed the torch of running the tournament to Alderbrook Mens Club President Roby Lane and his wife Lisa. Roby said the The tournament filled up with 144 golfers making up 72 teams and two separate shot-gut starts were needed to get that many rounds of golf completed over the two days.
“It’s the biggest tournament of the year we play at Alderbrook,” Lane said. “It’s a lot of work, but I have a good support crew each year who help with this large event.”
