The Nestucca Valley Backpack Program will host their 10th anniversary fundraiser on Saturday, September 14 from 6-8 p.m. at Rowboat Gallery and Windermere West Real Estate. Tickets will be $25. This will be an evening of art, wine, gourmet food, live music, and silent auction.
The Nestucca Valley Backpack Food Program is a community sponsored non-profit that provides nutritious, non-perishable, easy-to-prepare food to food insecure children of the Nestucca Valley School District. They work to ensure that the children have enough food on weekends and holidays when they can’t depend on school meals.
More than 70 percent of the children in the Nestucca Valley School District live close to or below the poverty line. At this income level, USDA predicts that more than 90 kids will be food insecure, and more than 40 will be very food insecure, meaning that they will experience hunger and inadequate nutrition, with negative consequences to their health, behavior, and ability to learn.
Last year, the program served over 100 students and handed out an average of 70 packs per week. The costs of the packs is about $12 per week for the program with a retail value closer to $20 per pack.
All of the proceeds from the fundraiser will go to purchasing food for the school children and food distribution costs. For more information, visit www.nvbackpackprogram.org.
