Please pray for my brother. His numbers are not too good right now. He had been doing fabulous with his six-year battle with pancreatic cancer, but as of June 10th, things are changing. Thank you so much.
Ole Olson has a celebration coming up, and it’s a big one. If you should see him around town, he will be celebrating his 90th. His family is throwing a big birthday celebration and will also honor his years with the Coast Guard. Happy birthday Ole. Dale and I think the world of you. You are one of the ‘good guys.’
I do have some ‘Happy’ news. The Rockaway Beach Friends of the Library is celebrating 20 years! And, they are doing it with a BIRTHDAY BASH on July 6th from 12-2pm at our Rockaway library at 120 N. Coral. They will serve cake, punch and, of course, entertainer, Steve Bauer tickles the ivories. He is a very talented local musician. Stop by and enjoy, and they are looking forward to thanking each and every one of you. Be sure to jot this on your calendar.
On the same day, from 10-2, the library is also having their annual book sale fundraiser. If you have ever been to one of these, you know it is a must for that summer reading. All books from the Friends Book Section will be half price, which means $1 hardbacks or 50 cent paperbacks. You can even use a provided bag and get one bag for $5.
Wow, the International Police Museum (IPM) has been busy! They had a successful garage sale in May and are looking forward to participating in the Tillamook Dairy Parade and the July 4th Auction. This fundraiser is in Center Park, which is the cute little area between the Little Crow and Offshore Grill. It will start at noon, or immediately after the parade. Their silent auction begins at 10am. The oral auction will be at the end of the parade. The auctioneer will be a local fellow, Lloyd Komlofske, and if you have never been to an auction, you must drop by and listen. I will tell you about some items to be auctioned off next week, but I do want you to know that the IPM is a 591()3 non-profit, so donations are tax deductible and help provide this valuable attraction to our awesome town, Rockaway Beach, Oregon.
I love summer. There are so many events. I will give you a teaser on this one, and fill in with more news about it next week. The Meals for Seniors are having a French Toast Breakfast on Saturday, July 6 from 8am-12. This is a wonderful fundraiser for the Meals for Seniors program. The cost is by donation. Plan on not cooking breakfast that day and bring your family and visitors to the St. Mary’s by the Sea Hall. It is yummy!
The Rockaway Beach Parks and Recreation program begins on July 5th. The kids will have their annual beach cleanup. Get your kids registered soon so they can walk in the July 4th parade. You can sign them up for the program by stopping by the city hall and filling out a registration or signing up online. During the month of July, the kids will be going swimming every Wednesday. On Thursday, field trips will be in Hillsboro, Depot Bay and Astoria. On Fridays, unless there is a burn ban, the community can enjoy a bonfire on the beach from 7-9pm. And the famous Tillamook County band, Benny and the Bay City Rockers will be performing on the evening of July 12 at the beach fire. The program ends on August 23, but that is so they can prepare for the grand finale, the Carnival in the Park. So, if you have kids, or have kids visiting, this is a great program.
Thank you all who have sent me emails and messages for my column. I am delighted to know you are reading my column… giggle. And you have all made it much more fun.
“One benefit of summer was that each day we had more light to read by.” I love summer! That’s Rockaway Beach, “Sugar Coated!”
