"Home of the Panthers" is a sculpted and ceramic tile and mosaic mural recently completed for East Elementary School.
The project was started at the end of last school year with two workshops. Students first sculpted their tiles, and then in the second workshop they did the glazing. The school will be undertaking a remodel this summer, so they will wait until the fall to put the art work up.
“We came back this year to mount a selection of some of the best tiles in the main panels, and also to do three mosaic sections depicting the panther logo of the school in two panels,” said Lawrence Adrian, artistic director for the Oregon Coast Children's Theatre & Center for the Arts.
“The main panel has a mountain scene also with a paw print logo used by the school. In all the students made over 1,200 original tiles based on the theme of the natural world,” Adrian said. “I'm very proud of the students and there are some very talented young artists at this school.”
Students got to take home one tile last school year; their second tile was given to the school for the public work of art. Besides the three main panels there will be over 12 smaller panels with additional tiles that can be used to decorate the school.
This is the 96th public work of art created by the Oregon Coast Children's Theatre & Center for the Arts. The organization, now in its 29th year, is a regional educational art organization with directors in both Tillamook and Lincoln County and based out of Lincoln County
